Irish SMEs have taken to e-commerce more successfully and in greater numbers than their EU counterparts.
According to the latest Eurostat survey, 32% of Irish SMEs are selling their products and services online, generating 37% of their total sales this way. We are also leading the way when it comes to e-exporting, with 17% of Irish SMEs selling online to other countries. The EU average is just 8%.
A change in VAT legislation has made it more economically viable to sell abroad. Under the old laws, Irish sellers were obliged to apply VAT at the Irish rate. Now however, the VAT added is that of the purchaser’s location (be it Germany, France or wherever else within the EU).
This success is yet another positive sign of how Ireland’s producers are viewed internationally.
