Irish SMEs continue to demonstrate resilience, with business optimism holding steady at a healthy level in the second quarter of 2026, despite ongoing economic pressures and rising costs.
The latest Linked Finance Business Optimism Index stands at 64% in Q2 2026, edging up from 63% in Q1 and 63% in Q4 2025. The latest figure is also higher than the 61% recorded in Q2 2025, highlighting a broadly positive outlook among Irish business owners and managers.

The latest Linked Finance SME Business Optimism Index, conducted by Ipsos B&A, provides a snapshot of how 370 Irish business owners and managers are performing and feeling about the months ahead. Covering trading activity, confidence, pricing, employment and future expectations, the research highlights both the resilience of Ireland's SME sector and the challenges businesses continue to face.
Business activity remains resilient
The latest data on current trading activity provides further evidence of this resilience. 30% of SMEs reported higher business activity in Q2 2026 compared with the same period last year, while 24% reported lower activity.
Almost half of businesses, 46%, said their activity was broadly unchanged.
This represents a notable improvement from the immediate post-pandemic period. In Q2 2020, 75% of businesses reported lower activity. Since then, the proportion reporting declining activity has fallen substantially, reaching 24% in Q2 2026.
The data suggests that while businesses are not immune to economic pressures, the trend towards weaker trading conditions has eased significantly.

Confidence remains above pre-pandemic levels
The longer-term trend in the Business Optimism Index also points to a more stable environment for Irish SMEs.
Following significant volatility between 2019 and 2021, optimism has settled into a relatively consistent range in recent years. The index reached a high of 68% in Q3 2021 before moderating, but has remained around the low-to-mid 60s throughout much of 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
At 64%, the latest reading suggests that Irish SMEs remain confident about their businesses and the opportunities ahead.

A positive outlook for Irish businesses
For many SMEs, resilience has become a defining feature of the current business environment. Rising costs, changing consumer behaviour and continued geopolitical volatility have created challenges, but businesses are continuing to trade, adapt and look for opportunities to grow.
The latest figures indicate that the majority of Irish SMEs are either maintaining or increasing their levels of business activity, while overall optimism remains firmly positive.
